Abstract Edge's Use of Open Source Continues to Attract Mission-Based Organizations
Agency Dedicated to Principles of Cause-Based Marketing To Create Content Management Systems For International Food Policy Research Institute, New York City Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center and Give Kids the World
June 30, 2003 (New York, NY) ‹ Abstract Edge (AE), an interactive marketing firm, announced today that their sophisticated use of open source software has won them new business several important mission-based organizations. Among their new clients are International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a group dedicated to identifying and analyzing policies for meeting the needs of the developing world for sustainable food; the New York City Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, which provides a home for the birth, nurture, celebration, caring, education and empowerment of their individuals and groups to achieve their fullest potential and Give Kids the World, a non-profit organization which fulfills the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families with memorable, joyful, cost-free visits at Central Florida attractions.
Abstract Edge, whose mission is to apply the fundamental principles of activism, grassroots and cause-based marketing to communication initiatives for not-for-profit companies and major brands alike, has worked extensively in developing the popular open source content management system platform called Plone in order to better serve existing and potential clients. Utilizing open source software, as opposed to proprietary software, enables AE to provide customized, enduring and cost-effective content management systems for their clients.
"In these economically challenging times, the days of spending millions of dollars on proprietary software are gone," says Scott Paley, COO for Abstract Edge. "Many of our customers are coming to us because we're providing solutions that make sense and don't cost them a lot of money."
IFPRI (ifpri.org), which has 16 centers all over the world, is partially funded by the World Bank and is always seeking ways to streamline their operation and direct funds toward nutritionally underserved communities around the world. They have decided to work with AE on building a platform for IFPRI's biofortification project, which seeks to utilize technology to create ultra-nourishing crops capable of alleviating malnutrition in even the most hard-to-reach populations. They have identified Plone as the right platform to use for their project.
"We are very excited to work with AE," said Bonnie McClafferty, senior communication specialist at IFPRI. "Their use of the Plone content management system is exactly the kind of innovation we look for as we seek to manage information to fulfill our global mission of providing nutrient-rich food to underserved communities."
AE will construct the platform with light, simple design that will enable about 60 researchers located in various localities around the world to contribute their research to the project and to hold discussion forums with each other. There will be a publicly available "face" of the project and there will be areas only visible to people working on the project. Many contributors will be using the system from countries where Internet access will be low bandwidth and will be people responsible for creating and uploading the content. This makes the AE system the best suited for IFPRI's needs.
AE will also be redesigning and redeveloping the gaycenter.org website and incorporating a content management system that will allow the Center personnel complete control over their website content after the launch of the site. The site will have the capacity for streaming audio and video, paid advertising and corporate sponsorships to be integrated as content types. It will interface with the Center's existing information and referral database and integrate with membership, events, activities, online ticket purchases and other payment functions. It will also integrate scheduling software, as well as create and manage confidential surveys.
Lastly, AE will launch a redesigned website for Give Kids the World (www.gktw.org) in September around the airing of a new set of Public Service Announcements for this organization devoted to fulfilling the dreams of children with life threatening illnesses. The new site will have enhanced features, better search engine results and an updatable content function for the Give the Kids the World employees. The site itself will have five general sections, including Corporate, Volunteer, Press Release, Family and Merchandise sections. AE will also consult on strategic planning.
