Dead card game lives again on Internet
Wichita, KS, United States - 06/8/04 - Sean Gleeson, a website designer in Wichita, KS, has launched "Wichita Faro," the world's first and only online faro game, blending entertainment with history.
Faro was once the most popular card game in America, enjoyed by cowboys and socialites alike.
Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday all made a living as faro dealers. Mark Twain wrote about the pleasures of faro, and Carry Nation wrote about its evils. The game is woven into the fabric of American history.
Faro fell out of fashion a century ago, and the game is now only played by a few antiquarians, as an historical reenactment. The game is dead. It's history.
But Sean Gleeson, a graphic designer in Wichita, KS, has given faro a new lease on life... as a website. He has created "Wichita Faro," a free faro game anyone can play on any web browser.
To play Wichita Faro (at www.gleeson.us/faro) is to step back in time, into a rowdy cowtown on America's western frontier.
The visual design and the sound effects recapture the ambience of the gambling parlor of a busy saloon. The jangly piano music (by Rob Gironda, a composer in Encinitas, CA) completes the transformation.
The rules of faro, and a brief outline of the colorful history of the game, are also on the site.
Why did Gleeson put so much work into making a free game that will not earn him a wooden nickel?
"I wanted to do this because nobody's done it yet," says Gleeson. "When I learned that nobody in the whole world had made an online faro game yet, I decided to be the first. I'm kind of a show-off that way."
"And besides," he adds, "there's a possibility that Wichita Faro could make me money in the future. If some game company offered to buy or license it, I'd certainly consider it."
The Wichita Faro site is located at www.gleeson.us/faro . The game is for entertainment only (no actual gambling) and it requires the free Flash plug-in.
Faro, the once-popular but now-dead card game, has been reborn as an entertaining and educational website. Wichita Faro was launched by Sean Gleeson this week.
Sean Gleeson, 37, is a freelance graphic designer and website developer living in Wichita, KS.
